OPEN CALL digital spring festival 2020

Von 18. bis 22. März 2020 findet die dritte Ausgabe des biennalen Medienkunstfestivals DIGITAL SPRING statt. Das Festival wird veranstaltet von der ARGEkultur, subnet (Salzburger Plattform für Medienkunst und experimentelle Technologien), dem Salzburger Kunstverein und dem Center for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) der Universität Salzburg sowie weiteren Partner*innen in Salzburg.

Das diesjährige Festival steht unter dem Motto STAND BY. Diese Zustandsbeschreibung bezieht sich nicht nur auf den Bereitschaftsmodus elektronischer Geräte – nicht an, nicht aus, aber jederzeit bereit – sondern ruft vor allem gesellschaftspolitische Konnotationen und Fragen auf. STAND BY beschreibt beispielsweise die Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie von User*innen digitaler Medien und sozialer Netzwerke als dauerhaften Stand-by-Modus, um jede eintreffende Information möglichst schnell aufnehmen und verarbeiten zu können. STAND BY erzählt von einem nahezu passiven menschlichen Subjekt im Angesicht der Komplexität und Rasanz des technischen Fortschritts. Oder entwirft ein Szenario, in dem der digitale Kapitalismus unsere Arbeitswelt vollständig umgestaltet hat. Der Mensch bleibt in dieser Vorstellung zwar eine jederzeit verfügbare Arbeitskraft, wird aber aufgrund von Technisierung von Arbeitsvorgängen als Träger*in von Arbeitsleistung zunehmend ausgeschlossen.

Projekteinreichung: Wir suchen nichtkommerzielle Medienkunstprojekte aus den Bereichen Bildender und Performativer Kunst. Die Projekte sollten speziell für das Festival konzipiert sein und sich mit dem Motto auseinandersetzen. Die eingereichten Arbeiten können sowohl für einen Ausstellungs- als auch für einen Aufführungsraum konzipiert sein. Projekte können von Festivalseite aus mit maximal 3.000 Euro finanziert werden, Koproduktionen sind möglich und wünschenswert. Räumlichkeiten, Infrastruktur und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit werden zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an lokale, sowie internationale Künstler*innen / Gruppen.

subnetAIR Artist in Residency Programm: Das Festival vergibt eine vierwöchige Residency von Ende Februar bis zum Ende des Festivals. Künstler*innen können sich mit einem Projekt zum Festival-Thema bewerben und dieses vor Ort entwickeln. Eine Projekt- Präsentation (entweder Showing des Arbeitsstands oder ggf. Premiere) findet im Rahmen des Festivals statt. Die Residency ist angesiedelt in den Räumlichkeiten von subnet und des HCI. Der*die Künstler*in erhält Zugang zu Infrastruktur und Ausstattung der Arbeitsstätten. Zusätzlich zu den Produktionsgeldern steht dem*der Künstler*in ein Arbeitsbudget von 1.000 Euro zur Verfügung. From 18th to 22nd March, the third edition of the media arts festival DIGITAL SPRING is taking place. The festival is hosted by ARGEkultur, subnet (platform for media-art and experimental technology), the Center for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) of Paris Lodron University Salzburg, Salzburger Kunstverein as well as other local partners.

This year's festival motto is STAND BY. This does not only refer to back-up modes of electronic devices – neither on, nor off, but always ready. It also raises sociopolitical connotations and questions. STAND BY, for example, describes the attention-economy of users of digital media and social networks in terms of a permanent stand-by-mode. As the device itself, the user has to work up each incoming information as fast as possible. STAND BY also tells about an almost passive human subject facing the complexity and terrific speed of technological progress. Or it sketches a scenario of an entirely modified work environment of digital capitalism. In this perspective, the individual is an always available workforce and is – due to technologization – more and more excluded from performing work him- or herself.

Projects: We are looking for non-commercial media-art-projects within the fields of Fine Arts and Performing Arts. The projects should be designed especially for this festival and cover the motto. The concepts can be designed for a performance or an exhibition space. The festival can finance the projects with a maximum of 3.000 Euro. Co-productions are possible and preferable. Spaces, infrastructure and public relation activities are provided by the festival. The call addresses local as well as international artists and groups.

subnetAIR Residency: The festival is awarding a four-week residency, from end of February until the end of the festival. Artists can apply with a project matching the festival motto and they can develop it on site. A presentation of the project (state of the working process or premiere) takes place during the festival. The residency is located in the rooms of subnet and HCI, where artists get access to the infrastructure and equipment of the workplace. Additionally to production costs, the artists are provided a working budget of 1000 €. To apply, please send us a letter of intent additionally to the project description. The letter should explain in a nutshell, why your project would benefit from the residency.
